1st Fish Hoek Sea Scouts are one of the oldest Sea Scout Groups in South Africa, and is one of the two founding Groups of the Sea Scout Base on Sandvlei, a vibrant centre for Scout sailing in the Western Cape and home to annual Kontiki competition.
Our Group is one of the most active in the Western Cape, with 30 Scouts and 30 Cubs. The Group attracts boys and girls of all races and backgrounds, between the ages of 7 and 18 years. Apart from the sailing activities, they participate in all the Scouting activities and competitions, developing leadership skills, self-reliance and a better understanding of our planet and the people around us. Financial hardship is not a deterrent – our Committee and parents will always make a plan to accommodate a keen youngster.
Scouting provides positive role models for leadership, teamwork, life skills and achievement, setting up today’s Scouts to become the next generation of pioneers and leaders. Our fomer Chief Scout, Sibusiso Vilane, is the first Black African to summit Mt Everest twice, by two different routes, and he was the first South African (with his Team Extreme partner Alex Harris), to walk completely unassisted, to the South Pole.
Of the 24 men to travel to the moon on the Apollo missions, 20 were scouts, including 11 of the 12 who have walked on the moon.
